We were in Siliguri in our dearest auntys house, and For a days outing mirik was our first choice . From Siliguri bus stand there's a bus at 7:30 in the morning that reaches mirik in two hours at a nominal fare of only 70 rupees . Our bus moved Swiftly through The chaos of the busy city alongside the railway track of the Darjeeling Himalayan railway. Mirik is centrally located on the way from Siliguri to Darjeeling, and serves as a great retreat to the tourists of Darjeeling returning to Siliguri. The lower gradient of the hills ,the moderately cool and comfortable weather, makes it a great choice for cultivation of the famous Darjeeling tea . the landscape offers a very different scenery than the other mountain ranges in Darjeeling . The winding walkways , the rolling hills and the sprawling tea gardens reminded me of munnar .. no I've never been there , and have only seen its pictures in the internet . I do not want to draw any comparison either ,as Mirik is beautiful in its own way . Far from the madding crowd we slowly ascended to the territory of the wild , where the tall pine trees stand in its own majesty , and the most uncared plants bloom in its own glory . The idyllic hill town offers a brilliant view from the tingling view point and attracts the tourists with its orange Orchards. Amidst emerald green tea estates, the monastery peeps out with its golden glow . For boating , there is the sumendu lake , and for shopping The pashupati market of Nepal at a distance of only 15kms, offers quality woollens at a great price . In short, though an underrated place , mirik offers a complete package for leisure travellers . The virgin wood is a silent sentinel of the changing times ,and of the increasing footfall. the tall alpines with its intricate roots remind us to stay grounded and the mysticism of the mighty mountain is what beckons us again and again . Mirik will always be a memorable visit,as this is where my parents came across the hills for the first time in their lives .Returning is always painful, but the smiling faces of maa and baba is a treasure to be cherished . The return journey became joyous with co operative locals and friendly co passengers . The ending was a surprise with a herd of wild elephants. As we never caught sight of such a scene before , our happiness knew no bound .
