Since Ahmedabad can be very easily navigated by using the bus service, we stayed near to the Geeta Mandir bus stand, which is the Central bus station of Ahmedabad .
We boarded bus number 71 and got down right infront of the Sabarmati Ashram , and the bus fare was only Rs.12/- per passenger.

We crossed the main road and entered the Ashram premises . The Sabarmati Ashram is situated just beside the river Sabarmati  .
This is one of the many residences of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi where he lived with his wife Kasturba Gandhi.

An important landmark of the Ashram is Gandhiji's cottage 'Hridaya Kunj', where some of the personal relics of Gandhiji are displayed.Since everything in the ashram beats in the tune of Gandhiji's life and his deeds , so the hut where he stayed is named as the Hriday kunj.

On 12th March 1930 , the famous Dandi March was led by Gandhiji from here .
78 followers walked for 385 kms to reach Dandi , where they manufactured salt and started the Civil Disobedience Movement .

There is a museum where Gandhiji's life history and the activities with which he was involved has been showcased  through lots and lots of photographs and oil paintings .

Besides, there is the Vinobha-Mira-Kutir , or One Hut Two Souls. It's the cottage, where Vinoba Bhave stayed from 1918 to 1921. Vinobha Bhave was the first Satyagrahi chosen by Gandhiji for his total commitment to truth, who later on, led the famous Bhoodan Andolan .
Madeleine Slade, a British woman was so devoted to Gandhiji’s ideologies and works , that she came and stayed at the same kutir from 1925 to 1933 , to participate in the Ashram activities. Her dedication towards her work, appeared to Gandhiji as Meera Bai's dedication towards Lord Sri Krishna, and so he  named her as Meera , after whom , the hut is also called the Meera Kutir.

Next, there is ,Magan lal Gandhi's cottage, where plenty of spinning wheels are displayed. Magan Lal Gandhi was a nephew of Gandhiji with whom Gandhiji was so attached that on his death Gandhi ji worte that Magan Lal's death has widowed him .
Gandhiji promoted  the use of spinning wheels to make Swadesi cotton clothes of khadi .From the raw stage how cotton is spinned to make the final yarn to make clothes, is exhibited along with the use of natural colours on them .

What we liked the most about the Ashram is that the authority is successful in keeping the original vibe of the place .
From the Ashram, the tall skyscrapers can be seen , but at this part of the Sabarmati, there is a lot of greenery - squirrels and birds dwell in their natural sorroundings - the huts still maintain the  simple rustic settings - a peaceful oasis in the jungle of concrete .

Expenses for two people:
Bus fare to Gandhi ashram -Rs.24/-
Entry is free .
Gandhi ashram to Mangal park return bus fare -Rs.26/- .
Total expenses Rs.50/- only for two  .
